what-is-airport-perimeter-security

In response to increasing threat levels and corresponding government-required security upgrades, the chain-link industry has developed a variety of cost-effective, high-security, anti-intrusion, perimeter security systems. These new systems are designed to help address the challenges faced by companies working to protect the North American Utility Grid (NERC compliance), strengthen the borders of military bases, airports, and infrastructure projects, and maximize the use of valuable financial resources.

1. Establishing and upgrading border security to increase intrusion deterrence

While chain link has always been the aviation industry's preferred perimeter security system, today's chainrings offer newly developed options in terms of fabric sizes, coatings and configurations, matching frames, and accessory products. These systems have been tested to the highest levels and manufacturing facilities are strategically located throughout North America to provide the widest range of options for addressing perimeter security issues today and in the future. Some examples of current options available for high-security projects are

- 1/2" 9 gauge and 3/8" 11 gauge: stops climbing and very time-consuming cut-ins, provides a degree of impact resistance. Visually intimidating. * Excellent ASTM F2781 test results

- 1 3/4" 6 gauge: harder to climb, increases cutting delay times at airports, prisons, increases safety levels at power generation, transmission, and substations, chemical plants, oil refineries. Visually intimidating.

- 2" 6 Specification: prevents cutting in areas more vulnerable to break-ins; reduces the threat of pedestrian break-ins and animal trespass.

- 2" 9 gauge: proven effective for perimeter protection at airports, power generation, transmission and substations, refineries, chemical plants, military, and government facilities, interior partitions

2. Meets ASTM standards and government compliance guidelines for penetration protection

Chain link’s detect-block-delay capability has been verified using ASTM-approved materials and test methods*. Tests conducted at the Southwest Research Institute's Mechanical and Materials Engineering Division in accordance with ASTM F2781, "Standard Practice for Forced Entry, Ballistic and Low Impact Testing of Security Fence Systems," demonstrate the proven superior test performance of chain links.

*ASTM specification comparisons show that the yield strength of the steel wire used to produce all chain link fabrics is at least 50% higher than the yield strength of the steel plate used to manufacture expanded metal panels.

3. Security system integration: providing a platform for early threat detection technology

The ability to integrate physical, electronic and cyber security procedures is one of the key considerations when selecting a perimeter security system. Chain-link systems are highly adaptable and can provide the basis for multiple systems while maintaining their primary visibility and strength capabilities. They also offer versatility, allowing for cost-effective installation to one level, thereby increasing ground security, improving the appearance, and enhancing tunnel deterrence.
